CVS will open the doors to a new dedicated veterinary nurse training centre in Harrogate in autumn 2024.

The third CVS’ nurse training centre in the UK, CVTC Harrogate, will be situated on the site of CVS’ newly relocated small animal The Harrogate Vet and will be working alongside CVS’ central learning, education and development team.

The new satellite centre will be Vetskill and RCVS approved and will specialise in training Student Nurses (SVNs) and Patient Care Assistants.

It will offer a day release classroom-based Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing[i], along with online courses - including a Level 2 certificate in Veterinary Care Support and Level 5 Advanced Veterinary Nurse Diploma courses in Practice Nurse and Emergency and Critical Care.

The centre will house all of the facilities and equipment needed for nurse theoretical and practical training, including modern and spacious classrooms with smartboard technology.

It will be run by an experienced teaching staff team – including qualified tutors and registered veterinary nurses.

Jackie Evans, Head of the CVTC Harrogate centre said: “We are delighted to be opening a third centre for veterinary nurse training. This will provide accessible training and highest quality training courses for veterinary nurses and veterinary care assistances in the Northeast region.”

CVTC is approved as a ‘good’ provider with OFSTED and is rated ‘excellent’ on the ‘find an apprenticeship’ service by its employers. In addition, its training centres have also exceeded national average ‘first time pass rates’ in almost all veterinary nursing modules, according to VetSkill data.

The first cohort of students are due to start at CVTC Harrogate in autumn 2024. Students wishing to apply for a places should visit Veterinary Nursing Chester (chestervtc.co.uk) or email [email protected].

CVS’ first nurse training college, CVTC Chester, was established in 2009 and originally based at Chestergates Veterinary Specialists, before moving into a new independent building in 2022. Its second CVTC Dereham centre was opened in 2023.

[i] Its Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing course is funded through an Apprenticeship for anyone working in England 50% of the time. The student must be employed in a veterinary training practice for a minimum of 30hrs per week which allows them to gain valuable experience and training which leads to a nationally recognised qualification which helps to upskill the workforce and offers them a future in the profession. It starts in May 2023.
