Dechra Launches Feline Hyperthyroidism Educational Support
Dechra has launched comprehensive feline hyperthyroidism educational resources to provide vets with up-to-date education, tips and support for cats with hyperthyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism is the most common feline endocrine disorder and is a major cause of morbidity in cats older than 10 years of age1. It is estimated that over 10% of all senior cats will develop the disorder1 which requires careful understanding and appropriate treatment and management by both vets and owners.
The new support will make it easier for vets to take control of hyperthyroidism through accurate and effective treatment and help vets deliver the best outcome for their hyperthyroid patients. It includes the launch of Felimazole Connect and two new online modules on the company’s popular Dechra Academy.
Felimazole Connect features comprehensive information on feline hyperthyroidism and consists of the clinical signs to look out for, diagnosis by endocrine specific tests and therapy plans for the individual patient which are dependent on a cat’s age and temperament and whether there is concurrent disease. Other owner factors covered on Felimazole Connect include cost and compliance.
The two new feline hyperthyroidism online CPD modules on Dechra Academy are presented by Emily Armstrong BVSc MRCVS, European companion animal technical marketing manager at Dechra. The ‘Diagnosing feline hyperthyroidism’ and ‘Treating and management of feline hyperthyroidism’ modules are 45 minutes long. The first module will provide vets with an understanding of feline hyperthyroidism, its prevalence and aetiology, clinical signs associated with the disorder and the multiple diagnostic techniques that confirm its presence. The second module will help vets to explain the different types of treatment and formulations available for feline hyperthyroidism to their clients, the importance of long-term monitoring, establishing good client communication and the risk of concurrent disease including the impact of chronic kidney disease in managing the disorder.
Dechra companion animal brand manager, Thomas Johnson, comments: “Most cats with feline hyperthyroidism can live long and healthy lives with consistent management and treatment which involves both the cat owner and their vet. It is therefore important that vets are up to date on the latest information on this common disorder to ensure the best clinical outcome for animals in their care. Our new resources provide vets with comprehensive support on feline hyperthyroidism to ensure the best clinical outcome for cats in their care.”
