Helen Morrell of Surrey Vet Physio Helen Morrell of Surrey Vet Physio Kate Lukas’ season has got off to a great start after Helen Morrell of Surrey Vet Physio agreed to sponsor Kate and her horses for the season. Helen is the only qualified Veterinary Physiotherapist in the country who is also a trained Veterinary Thermographer. She has been a pioneer in this field, and set-up Veterinary Thermal Imaging three years ago to provide freelance thermal imaging services to vets and physios across the country. Helen studied thermography at the University of Florida Veterinary School. “We were working with the Event Riders Association on a feature, and I was asked to go and see Kate, so that she could test out thermal imaging and physiotherapy,” says Helen. “I was really impressed with Kate’s attitude and her horses, and decided to support her. I’m also providing regular physiotherapy and thermal imaging sessions at Kate’s yard for her clients.” Thermal Imaging and physiotherapy complement each other incredibly well, as the imaging pinpoints the seats of problems that the therapist can then work on, as well as providing a record of treatment progress ensuring optimum time to return to work. Often the area that the physiotherapist has been asked to work on (typically the back) is just an early indicator of a more serious problem brewing elsewhere, so thermal imaging can offer the vet an early indication of the need to look more closely at certain joints, ligaments or tendons. Treating both simultaneously provides the very best outcome. “I am delighted to be supported by Surrey Vet Physio for the 2013 season,” says Kate Lukas. “Within the first session Helen was quick to pick up on different problems with a few of my horses, some of which I was aware of and some of which I couldn't quite put my finger on. The combination of Helen's experience and eye alongside VTI’s technology is great and means we can pinpoint the problems, keep an image diary and that the horses get the relevant treatment. I have several horses upgrading to Intermediate and beyond this season and am aware that the physical demands on them really intensify at this level so I am so pleased that they will get the support that they deserve to hopefully keep them right and be the best that they can be.”
