Vets Now has today (10 June 2024) opened bookings for the UK’s only dedicated emergency and critical care Congress for the vet and vet nursing professions, taking place on Thursday 07 and Friday 08 November 2023 at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds.

Open to all veterinary professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in emergency and critical care, this year's Congress will see up to 70 hours of CPD available across six learning streams – with a new stream added covering ‘Catastrophic case conversations’ – including hands-on workshops and networking opportunities.

New for 2024, is delegates will also be able to download Congress recordings so they can access the entire two-day event. The 2024 ECC Congress programme boasts an impressive lineup of over 30 internationally-renowned speakers and leading clinicians.

This year’s keynote speaker is specialist transplant nurse and chair of the UK One Health Coordination Group, Helen Ballantyne, and organisers will also be welcoming renowned veterinary nurse Ken Yagi, formerly program director of the CPR simulation lab at Cornell University, who’ll deliver an update on the new RECOVER (CPR) guidelines being released this year.

Racheal Marshall, RVN and Head of Clinic Nursing Standards at Vets Now, has alongside Simon Hagley, ECC Specialist and Clinical Director at Vets Now hospital in Manchester, planned the veterinary and nursing programmes. Supported by Helen Rooney, RVN and Referral Nurse Training & Development Lead at IVC Evidensia, along with national ECC lead Dan Lewis, they've crafted an unmissable lineup.

Simon Hagley said: “We are confident our 2024 programme offers something for everyone, no matter what stage of your ECC career you are at, from students through to specialists and everything in between. We listened to delegate feedback from last year’s event, and we have brought back some firm favourites including our ’Controversies’ and ‘Joined Up Thinking sessions’, but we have introduced exciting new streams including 'Catastrophic case conversations'.

“We’ve also we’ve extended the popular nursing streams from last year to span two entire days and lunchtime case presentations from interns across the country are also on the programme.”

One of the programme highlights this year will be a case-based discussion panel, where Ken Yagi, Stephen Collins and Helen Wilson will present a variety of challenging and complex critical cases, discussing the decision-making processes and differing approaches, highlighting that one-size rarely fits all in the realms of ECC, where clinical equipoise can be rife. Advanced Practitioner, Aoife Reid, will also lead a discussion on contextualised care.

Racheal Marshall said: “In line with Vets Now's commitment to offering an engaging learning experience, and to build on the success of last year, the ECC Congress programme for 2024 is built to be interactive and more practical. Participants will have the opportunity to actively engage with speakers during interactive sessions, fostering a dynamic learning environment that encourages dialogue and knowledge sharing.”

Speaking about the non-clinical sessions, Racheal added: “Whilst knowledge and technical abilities are important in ECC, it’s important to remember the other aspects- the communication, the collegiality, the self-care and time-management – that help determine whether you have a good shift. So we’re looking forward to delving into the non-clinical sessions the programme has to offer too.”

And Congress isn’t only about learning, however, as the Thursday evening features an amazing, themed Gala Dinner to allow delegates to engage and relax after a day’s learning. This year’s theme is set to be announced on the Vets Now Social Media channels in the coming week. There are also opportunities to unwind with VetYogi, mindfulness and a morning running club.

Woodley Equipment returns as headline event sponsor.
