Birmingham Vet Hospital Celebrates 1st Anniversary
Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital, the state-of-the-art pet hospital in Longbridge, Birmingham, is celebrating its first anniversary this November.
The referral hospital has seen over 7,000 pet patients since it opened its doors in November 2023, including over 2,000 cats and 4,200 dogs.
One notable case was Nova the Dalmatian puppy who developed a rare, abnormal ear condition that would have led to infections, an abscess and hearing problems if left untreated. The soft tissue surgery team carried out a total ear canal ablation and a lateral bulla osteotomy which involved removing the dog’s external ear canal and making a window in the bulla, while preserving Nova’s trademark floppy Dalmatian ear.
The neurology team also operated on Bernie the dog, who had a slipped disc in his neck causing paralysis of all his legs and difficulty breathing. Surgeons conducted a ventral slot procedure, removing the disc material causing the issue and he was then managed by the emergency and critical care team to support him with a ventilator while he recovered. After two days on a ventilator as well as individually tailored post-operative care and physiotherapy, Bernie was discharged two weeks later with his movement restored and breathing normal.
Over 100 hours of CPD has been delivered to vets and nurses in the hospital’s modern facilities over the last year, covering disciplines including orthopaedics, emergency triage and cardiology. The hospital has also welcomed its first cohort of interns to the team, who will rotate through surgery, medicine, anaesthesia, neurology and out-of-hours care over the next 12 months.
Hospital Director Julie Davis says she is incredibly proud of the team at Blaise and all they have achieved over the last year:
"It's been a fantastic first year for Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital and we’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response from both pet owners and local vets. We have an incredible and dedicated team of experts here and we look forward to many more years of supporting the local community and helping pets get the best care they possibly can.”
Blaise is currently running a cat blood drive, encouraging local cat owners to register their healthy pets to donate blood in emergency situations – in previous situations staff have brought their own cats in to donate blood but this drive will aim to widen the database of suitable donors. Pets will go through a screening process which will involve an examination, blood tests and a heart scan before being added to the donation register.
Easily accessible from the A38, Blaise is open 24/7 for referrals from surrounding daytime vet practices and for emergencies. For more information, visit www.blaise-referrals.com.
