Livingston Animal Hospital Earns National Award For Environmental Work
A popular animal hospital in Livingston has earned a national prize in recognition of its eco-friendly practices and sustainability programmes.
Linnaeus-owned Veterinary Specialists Scotland (VSS) has been accredited as a Silver level practice by Investors in the Environment (iiE).
iiE is a nationwide initiative that encourages firms to transform their working practices to introduce more environmentally-friendly, cleaner and more sustainable methods and systems.
Among the key achievements at VSS is a 29 per cent reduction in its carbon footprint, a 38 per cent reduction in its electricity use, a 4 per cent reduction its natural gas use, a 14 per cent reduction in its water use and a 29 per cent reduction in the use of the anaesthetic gas, isoflurane, which is also a greenhouse gas.
The audit report praised the team at VSS for driving down emissions in many key areas, while also singling out the senior management team for supporting the practice’s sustainability work by being actively involved in green team meetings and initiatives.
Emilia Porter, a clinician in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia at VSS, and green team member, said: “We’ve introduced many changes at VSS since starting our journey with Investors in the Environment.
“It’s great to see that these changes are having a meaningful impact across our hospital. Reaching Silver has given the team a boost, but we are already focusing our efforts on the next goal, which is to achieve the iiE Green Award, the highest level award it offers.”
The audit report also praised the green team at VSS for the number of resources being measured, which far exceed the number required at this level.
VSS is a specialist-led multidisciplinary referral hospital offering industry-leading services in cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine (feline and canine), neurology, orthopaedics, and soft tissue surgery, supported by specialists in diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia and analgesia.
