Agilio Software, the UK’s leading provider of frontline healthcare operations software, has released findings from a recent survey* emphasising the sustained popularity of online learning within the veterinary profession, despite a resurgence of in-person CPD opportunities post-pandemic.

The survey, conducted among 130 members of veterinary teams across the UK, including vets, nurses, receptionists and practice managers, revealed that on-demand video-based CPD ranked as the top choice of learning platform for 47% of respondents, while online text-based learning was next at 22%.

In addition to learning preferences, the survey identified the key non-clinical CPD topics that are top of mind for veterinary teams in 2024. Amidst recruitment challenges and a demanding workplace environment, complaint management stood out as the most sought-after topic, with 57% of respondents expressing interest in this area. Communication and customer service were also highlighted by 43% and 44% of respondents respectively.

Despite the evident preference for online learning, there are barriers to the more widespread adoption of online learning platforms within practices. Cost was identified as the primary obstacle by over 70% of respondents, while 80% noted a lack of time for CPD completion as a significant challenge.

Commenting on the survey findings, Emma Barnes, Managing Director for Veterinary at Agilio, emphasised the need for accessible and cost-effective online CPD, saying, “The veterinary workforce is stretched and finding time to attend in-person CPD can be challenging. Flexible online solutions that accommodate busy schedules empower vets, nurses and the wider practice team to fulfil their CPD requirements whenever and wherever they choose.”

The survey also highlighted a growing recognition within the industry of effective diary management to help address workforce shortages, with over a third of respondents (34%) expressing interest in support with rota and team management. Effective rota management frees up staff time, enabling clinical staff to focus on patient care and helping the whole practice team to thrive.

Agilio Software is committed to easing burdens on the veterinary profession through innovative solutions like iLearn, Agilio’s online training and CPD platform and iTeam, the company’s HR and management software. With iLearn practice subscriptions starting at just £83 per month, practices gain access to a diverse range of bitesize CPD, available anytime, anywhere through individual staff log-ins.

Emma emphasised the pivotal role of the survey findings in guiding future developments, stating, “These insights are invaluable in determining how we can best support the profession going forwards.”
