Grant from the Institute of Leadership to fund training initiative

The Veterinary Management Group (VMG) has been awarded a Leadership Grant of £5,000 by the Institute of Leadership (IoL) to run a development programme to support the growth of StreetVet, a charity that delivers free essential veterinary care to the pets of those experiencing homelessness across the UK.  The aim of the project is to develop leadership and management knowledge within the fast-growing charity and to enhance the skills of individuals across StreetVet in line with best practice in contemporary charity leadership.

The programme structure has been developed by the VMG’s Learning and Development Manager, Dr Hannah Perrin, and StreetVet CEO Zoe Abbotts based on the current leadership challenges and opportunities facing the charity. It consists of a year’s worth of training plans and resources.

As part of the programme, members of the charity’s senior leadership team and staff in developmental roles will complete the VMG’s Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 5 Award and Certificate in Veterinary Leadership and Management, with each participant focusing on priority areas for their specific roles.  These could include, for instance, Coaching and Mentoring, Developing Teams and Leading Change.  The charity believes that this flexibility will ensure that all StreetVet volunteers benefit from the training resources created, either directly or indirectly.

The grant has been awarded to the VMG by the IoL from its fund to support leadership development, particularly among small to medium-sized enterprises.  The IoL is the professional membership body for more than 50,000 leaders, managers, coaches and mentors and creates education and undertakes research to unlock individual leadership potential.

StreetVet has more than 500 volunteers, including 24 teams of vets and vet nurses, who take their experience out onto the streets and deliver free accessible, non-judgemental care and support to ensure both human and companion animal wellbeing. The charity also runs an accredited hostel scheme to enable more hostels and temporary accommodation providers to become pet friendly and support their residents to continue to care for their pets as they transition into longer-term accommodation.

The VMG is the professional association for all those in leadership and management roles in the veterinary sector.  It empowers and equips veterinary leaders and their organisations to learn, share, and grow. The VMG Award, Certificate and Diploma in Veterinary Leadership and Management are modular qualifications with an emphasis on flexibility, accessibility, and real-world relevance.

Dr Hannah Perrin, who will deliver the training for StreetVet on behalf of the VMG, said: “StreetVet is a multi-award-winning charity, whose highly trained volunteers carry out vital work to support the companion animals that mean so much to many of those living with homelessness.

“As the demand for its services grows, StreetVet’s leadership team recognises the importance of developing the leadership skills and structure it needs to enable its future growth. Our training will support not just the charity’s senior leaders but also members of its outreach teams across the UK.  We hope it will also help them in their ‘day jobs’ in veterinary practice.”

She added: “This grant from the IoL is national recognition of the quality of the training we’ve been delivering to veterinary professionals since the launch of our suite of VMG Veterinary Leadership and Management qualifications in 2021.  We can’t wait to get underway with our training programme for the amazing StreetVet team.”

Zoe Abbotts said: “StreetVet is delighted to have been approached by VMG with the opportunity to develop veterinary leadership and management skills internally. We’re experiencing high demand for the services and support we offer so it is crucial that we enhance our team and infrastructure to meet this demand and to ensure the long-term sustainability of our charity.”
