One of Scotland’s leading veterinary hospitals has gone to great lengths to recruit a new neurology clinician to its expert team.
New arrival Camila Diogo has swapped the beaches of Brazil for the mountains of the Highlands after joining Linnaeus-owned Veterinary Specialists Scotland (VSS) in Livingston.
Brazilian Camila has relocated to become a key part of the neurology team at VSS which treats animals suffering from problems in their brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and neuromuscular junctions.
She said she was settling into her new role and new life well and is looking to add further to her expertise and experience working within the state-of-the-art VSS hospital.
Camila explained: “Veterinary medicine and neurology are a really big and important part of my life.
“I moved far away from home because of this passion and I am fully committed to delivering the highest quality care and to always learn more and more.
“I am keen to add to my skills, especially in advanced neurosurgery and challenging cases such as craniotomies and fractures.
“I’m really interested in MRI studies, too, particularly correlating our MRI findings with clinical findings and the neuroanatomy.
“Naturally, it’s also true that I enjoy going back to Brazil to see my parents and visit family and friends.
“But I’m already finding a new passion here in Scotland and that’s hiking the beautiful mountains that we have here.”
VSS hospital director Anne-Marie Dougherty is certainly confident Camila’s career can reach new heights at the superbly-equipped hospital.
She said: “We’re delighted to welcome Camila to VSS and we’re sure she can be an extremely valuable addition to our comprehensive neurology service where she’ll be dealing with a wide range of challenging cases.
“The most common neurological conditions we see include inverterbral disc disease, idiopathic epilepsy, facial nerve paralysis, metabolic encephalopathies, cerebrovascular accidents and brain and spinal cord tumours.
“Other prevalent issues are vertebral malformations, degenerative myelopathy, degenerative lumbosacral diseases, syringomyelia, movement disorders and myopathies.”
Camila graduated from Brazil’s State University of Ceara in 2009 followed by a two-year advanced training programme in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the country’s State University of Londrina.
She then completed a two-year master’s degree in veterinary neurology at Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, Brazil.
Camila continued her studies undertaking a veterinary PhD in neurology and another master’s degree at University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Portugal.
In 2018, Camila moved to the UK and worked in a busy general practice before completing a rotating internship, a neurology internship and a European College of Veterinary Neurology residency.
VSS is a specialist-led multidisciplinary referral hospital offering services in cardiology, dermatology, emergency and critical care, internal medicine (feline and canine), neurology, orthopaedics, and soft tissue surgery, supported by specialists in diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia and analgesia.
