Young Dairy Vet Of The Year 2023
Hosted at the 5-star Grosvenor Hotel in London, the glittering annual Cream Awards, presented by British Dairying magazine, welcomed some 350 finalists and guests across a range of categories highlighting the very best of the British Dairy Industry. Virbac is proud to support these awards with its sponsorship of The Young Dairy Vet of the Year.
‘Virbac has been supporting dairy vets with products and services for over 50 years and recognise the commitment of young dairy vets to the profession,’ said Sabrina Jordan. ‘The standard of nominations into this category was outstanding, and our winner and highly commended nominees are a true credit to the veterinary profession, both are shining lights of the future’.
This year’s Young Dairy Vet of the Year Award went to 30-year-old Tom Warboys of Synergy Farm vets. Tom graduated from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 2017 and joined Synergy Farm Health full-time in 2018, after completing his postgraduate diploma (PGDipVCP) with the RVC and is an accredited British Cattle Vets Association bTB and Johnes disease advisor.
Nominated by his practice, Tom is described as a fine example of a dedicated caring professional who is passionate about sustainability. With a keen sense of his clients’ future needs to meet their commercial objectives and legislative requirements, Tom has developed strong working relationships with the farms under his care.
The judging panel found that Tom uses data effectively in herd health planning to highlight areas of improvement, working in partnership with his clients to promote disease prevention and profitability. Tom’s clients spoke of his knowledge and caring attitude and how much he is valued as part of their team.
“It was a privilege to be a part of the awards and to see farmers and businesses acknowledged- farmers don’t always get the recognition they deserve and seeing British dairying showcased was amazing’, said Tom. ‘I hope winning is reward for the time and effort colleagues at Synergy put into young vets too, and that I can put it to good use supporting clients and working with other organisations within the dairy industry. My aim as a vet has been simply to support clients the best I could, both clinically and emotionally, so to have won made it a fantastic night and one I won’t be forgetting!”
Runner up went to another outstanding candidate, Charlie Mays of LLM Vets. Also 30 years old, Charlie’s nomination was encouraged by his colleagues. Charlie carries out a range of roles that encompass all aspects of calf health monitoring and was lead vet in establishing a new branch of LLM opening in South Derbyshire; he also devised a ‘healthy calf project’ enrolling his famers into a colostrum management scheme that has developed to become a full service to LLM clients.
The judging panel found Charlie made effective changes on farm towards preventive healthcare and uses data to assist with health and profitability. Charlie also lobbies government to support the interests of the farmer and the industry and is clearly an ideas man.
‘I feel very privileged to have been recognised on such a prestigious night for the dairy industry, the Cream Awards 2023 was such a brilliant night’. said Charlie. ’The nominees in the category are truly inspiring vets and to be highly commended makes me feel very proud of my contributions to the industry so far. I am really excited for the future, there are no doubt tough times ahead for farming and the dairy industry, vets included, but ultimately the people and animals in this sector are truly exceptional and I have no doubt that we all continue to drive standards worldwide’.
