A six-year-old Pug is fully focused on the future after successful surgery to remove a malignant tumour growing dangerously close to her eye.

Specialists at Linnaeus-owned Eastcott Veterinary Referrals, in Swindon, Wiltshire, combined their skills and experience to carry out the intricate operation on the treasured pet called Skyler.

Eastcott’s small animal expert Allie Matchwick and head of ophthalmology Kat Manchip carefully examined Skyler to plan a precise approach to the challenging situation.

Allie, a RCVS-recognised specialist in small animal surgery, said: “Skyler needed urgent treatment to remove a mast cell tumour that was growing near to her right eye.

“Surgery is recommended to remove mast cell tumours, along with a wide margin of surrounding skin to prevent any recurrence.

“The added complication in Skyler’s case was the tumour’s location which put her eye and her sight at risk.

“I discussed the surgery in detail with Kat and together we came up with a solution that would mean the complete removal of the tumour and being able to save the eye.

“This involved the two of us working together to cut out a portion of the eyelid and reconstruct the eyelid margin by borrowing a portion of skin from Skyler’s forehead to fill the gap left by the removal of the tumour.

“The delicate procedure went very well and Skyler was soon allowed home where she has recovered very well. She is now all healed and back living her best Pug life!”

Skyler’s owner Frankee Tracey, from Gloucester, says it was a traumatic time but is so grateful to specialists Allie and Kat.

She said: “It was gut wrenching when I was told the lump close to Skyler’s eye was a malignant tumour.

“It felt like my world had collapsed and I was extremely concerned. Tumours are awful, and for it to be potentially cancerous was even worse.

“Skyler’s been by my side since she was three months old and has been my rock ever since. It’s always just been the two of us and we've been through a lot together.

“Everyone at Eastcott was amazing. From the reception staff, who were so welcoming and helpful, right through to all the nurses who cared for Skyler after the surgery.

“Special thanks must go to the vet specialists Allie and Kat. They put my mind at ease and walked me through every step of the treatment.

“They were so kind and attentive and treated her with care and compassion and tried to keep her at ease every step of the way.

“That’s why I would 100 per cent recommend Eastcott Referrals to any pet owner. Skyler has made a brilliant recovery. You wouldn’t even know she’d had anything wrong with her.

“She is currently living her best life in our new home, going on her favourite walks, eating her favourite chews and playing like a little puppy every day. It’s wonderful.”
