Vets across the UK are being invited to contribute to a nationwide survey to study research priorities across the profession.

The survey, which has approval from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Ethics Review Panel, aims to identify the research questions and topics that are most important to the country’s vets.

It is being conducted by Mars Veterinary Health’s director of associate research, Dr Luisa De Risio, and associate research manager Dr Hannah Sargent. Veterinary group Linnaeus is part of Mars Veterinary Health, a family-owned company with 30 years of experience in veterinary services.

Dr De Risio believes the survey, titled ‘Identifying veterinarians’ research priorities in the United Kingdom: a study using delphi-like survey methods’, will highlight the key areas important to UK-based vets, where evidence is needed to improve and advance veterinary care.

“We want to further understand the research topics and questions that UK vets believe are most critical to improving veterinary care and advancing the veterinary profession,” said Dr De Risio.

“We are particularly interested in the topics, issues and questions that vets think scientific evidence would help when practicing veterinary medicine, whether specific to their role or the entire profession. It’s vitally important to highlight potential research gaps, so we can ensure clinical studies have the greatest possible impact to help improve outcomes for our patients.”

The survey will be conducted in two parts: The first survey will close in early March, with the second survey circulated in April for three months. The results will be published in an online, open access peer-reviewed journal.

Dr De Risio added: “Our findings will be available to everyone in the veterinary profession and support research not just here in the UK but also our peers in other countries.

“We want to gather as many responses as possible, to help prioritise the research topics or questions of greatest importance to veterinary surgeons.”

The survey advances support for, and investment in, clinical research and veterinary science at Mars Veterinary Health and Linnaeus. More than 1,000 clinical studies are underway or have been completed by Linnaeus associates between 2019 and 2023, including 656 published in a journal or presented at a conference.

In 2024, the Linnaeus clinical research team also supported 387 enquiries on topics including ethical review and study design, statistical support, legal and regulatory requirements, funding and publication.
