Neurology Specialist Matt Returns 'home' With Wear Appointment
A Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology has returned to the region he grew up in after an opportunity he ‘couldn’t pass up’.
Matt James grew up in the North East of England, before moving on to train to become a vet more than 13 years ago.
Now, he is returning to the region after being offered a position at Linnaeus-owned Wear Referrals in County Durham.
Matt is one of just a handful of vets with a EBVS European Specialist in small animal neurology and neurosurgery qualification and said he was delighted to be back living and working in the North East.
He said: “I haven’t lived permanently in the region since I left to study in 2012. Following graduation in 2017, I worked for two years in a small animal primary care practice near Bath, then undertook my residency near Derby.
“I am thrilled to return to the North East and excited to rediscover all it has to offer with my young family. Our bouncy springer spaniel is particularly pleased with the countryside and coastal walks!
“The opportunity to start a new role as a neurologist at Wear Referrals was one I could not pass up.
“I had already spent some time at the hospital, having previously completed a clinical rotation within the anaesthesia department, so was confident I would fit in well with the team.”
Matt said he has already enjoyed a warm welcome from both the Wear team and clients.
He added: “In my short time so far at Wear, the main highlight has been the warm welcome I have received.
“It's clear Wear benefits from being a truly multidisciplinary hospital with a large number of specialist vets and nurses, while also retaining a friendly and positive atmosphere, and I'm excited to be a part of this going forward.
“I hope my qualification as a European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology means I am able to contribute to the existing neurology team at Wear, which already boasts a wealth of knowledge and experience across a number of areas.”
Wear hospital director Darren Stubbs said: “We’re delighted to welcome Matt to the team and back to the North East. He’s a great addition to our already-impressive neurology department and we are excited to have him on board.”
Wear specialises in providing expert multidisciplinary care, including anaesthesia, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, intensive care, internal medicine, neurology, out-of-hours emergency and critical care, oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
