A renowned London animal hospital, which has just moved to a new state-of-the-art facility, has further boosted its respected team with a new head of anaesthesia and analgesia.

Andrew Foster joins Linnaeus-owned London Vet Specialists (LVS) and is looking forward to being a key member of the team at LVS in Hammersmith.

Andrew, who graduated from the University of Bristol in 2015, said: “I hope we can create an environment where everyone in the team is empowered to have a voice and can learn from one another in as collaborative a way as possible, in order to provide the safest care to our patients.”

Among the responsibilities in his new role at LVS, Andrew will be supervising and training the nursing and intern teams in providing safe and effective anaesthesia and analgesia, as well as providing advanced techniques for the management of both acute and chronic pain.

His career started at a referral centre in Bristol where he completed a rotating internship. This was followed in 2017 with specialist anaesthesia training at The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in London. Following this specialist training, Andrew continued as a senior clinician at The RVC, gaining European specialist status in 2021.

Andrew, who has published research focusing mostly on ultrasound-guided locoregional anaesthesia, said: “My clinical interests include managing critically ill patients, particularly those following trauma, as well as those with advanced respiratory and cardiac disease.”

His most memorable cases are those which have benefitted from the placement of epidural catheters to eliminate pain.

Andrew added: “The impact to these patients is huge – to see them eating, drinking and moving around as healthy patients would despite having major surgery or incredibly painful conditions, is very rewarding and often reduces their recovery times.”

Outside of work, Andrew enjoys exploring London, is a keen aquarist and is currently building a bioactive paludarium. He is also a keen scuba-diver and is hoping to learn to play the drums.

LVS is a multidisciplinary veterinary referral facility which offers expert care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, neurology, oncology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, ophthalmology and soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery.
