A vet at a leading animal hospital has been recognised as a specialist in ophthalmology.
Thomas Large recently joined Linnaeus-owned Primrose Hill Veterinary Hospital in Sallynoggin, County Dublin, which offers a dedicated ophthalmology referral service for cases from across Ireland.
Now, Thomas has been recognised as a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO) following years of research, exams and training.
To achieve this, Thomas had to undertake two internships, a three-year clinical residency programme, two research projects and exams.
He said: “I’m so happy to have passed my ECVO exams and to be recognised as a diplomate in veterinary ophthalmology.
“I have been working for years to achieve this goal and have been incredibly fortunate to have worked with a fantastic team of people across multiple veterinary specialities who have become great friends. It feels like finally crossing the finishing line.
“I am embarking on an exciting new life in Dublin where I have joined a new fantastic ophthalmology team at Primrose Hill, who were very supportive during my recent exams.”
Thomas graduated from the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science in 2015 and worked in general practice in the UK for two years. He then began a rotating internship at DWR Veterinary Specialists, also owned by Linnaeus, in Cambridgeshire.
It was then he progressed to a specialist ophthalmology internship, which led to starting the ECVO residency programme and publishing two scientific papers in the journal ‘Veterinary Ophthalmology’, which he presented at the 2021 ECVO congress.
Outside of work, Thomas enjoys walking his dog Finn, a Springer cross Cocker Spaniel.
